1. The lanyard / safety key
No lanyard clipped on — or the wrong key on a Sea-Doo with a coded key (DESS) — and the ski won't start. Make sure it's seated firmly; on coded keys you'll usually hear a confirmation beep.
2. A weak or dead battery
The most common cause we see. If you hear clicking, a weak crank or nothing at all, the battery is the first suspect — especially if the ski has been sitting. A battery tender between rides makes a huge difference.
3. Corroded or loose battery terminals
Salt air corrodes terminals fast. White or green crust, or a loose cable, can stop the starter even with a good battery. Clean and tighten them (engine off, negative first).
4. A blown fuse or a bad starter relay
If the display lights up but nothing happens when you press start, a fuse or the starter relay may have failed. Check your fuse box — and if the fuses are fine, the relay or starter likely needs a tech.
5. Old or bad fuel
Fuel left sitting for weeks — especially ethanol fuel in Florida heat — goes stale and causes hard starting and rough running. If the ski sat a while, old fuel is a strong suspect.
6. Fouled spark plugs
Worn or fouled plugs mean a weak spark: the engine cranks but won't catch. Plugs are cheap and part of every full service.
7. A flooded engine
Repeated cranking can flood the engine with fuel — and water can get in after a flip or an incorrect flush. If you suspect water in the engine, stop cranking and call a tech: cranking a water-filled engine can cause serious damage.
8. Warning lights or limp mode
Modern skis protect themselves. A warning light, beep codes or limp mode point to a fault the computer has stored — a diagnostic scan reads it in minutes.

Quick answers
Why does my jet ski click but not start?
A clicking sound usually means a weak battery, corroded terminals or a failing starter relay. Charge the battery and clean the terminals first.
Can old gas stop a jet ski from starting?
Yes. Fuel that has sat for weeks goes stale, especially in the Florida heat, and can cause hard starting or no start at all.
